Date Night with the Grinch

So I was lucky enough to get passes to see How the Grinch Stole Christmas last night at the Fox Theatre (one of the many reasons I love being a blogger). Since my 2 y/o was a little too young to really enjoy it, hubby and I just made a date night out of it.

First, I must admit, I had actually forgotten the whole story of the Grinch, so it really did take me back to my childhood a bit. Dr. Seuss characters have been known to creep me out when brought to life (I.e. Cat in the Hat), but even the hairy, abominable grinch didn't seem to scare the kids in the audience at all.

Speaking of the Grinch, what a phenomenal performance! I'm not an acting critic by any stretch if the imagination, but I thought Stephan Karl, who played the Grinch, really brought the character to life. Also, they don't get much more adorable than the little girl who played Cindy-Lou Who! If she doesn't make your heart melt, you just might be...well...the Grinch!

So, to sum it all up, if you get the opportunity to see this, it's definitely a treat for the whole family, and you won't be disappointed!

Product Review: Baby Plus Prenatal Education System

Here we have it: My very first (of many hopefully) product review on this blog! (For those of you who are new, my other blog is Atl Deal Finder)

Anyway, a couple of weeks ago, Serious Krystyn demonstrated and gave me this little contraption called the Baby Plus Prenatal Education System.  What it is basically is a little audio device you place on your belly which features a "curriculum" or a series of 16 naturally derived sounds that resemble a mother's heartbeat.  As your pregnancy progresses, the curriculum also advances and the  rhythm of the sounds increase incrementally. According to the studies, babies who use this product should have an intellectual, social, creative, and emotional advantage from the time they are born.  Several parent testimonies even alluded to the fact that this product has helped their children with learning multiple languages and performing arts skills.

What I love about it:

I remember when I was pregnant with baby #1 (Leila), I would place my headphones on my belly at night playing soothing classical music.  Unfortunately, this could only be done in one position so the limited mobility aspect was a definite turn off.  This product, on the other hand, goes right into a little "fanny pack" thingy so you are free to move around, do housework, or whatever else while the baby's listening to the sounds.

What's not to love?:

The heartbeat sounds are 100% audible by not only the baby, but you and everyone around you.  There is no volume adjuster, so God forbid you take a phone call or try to watch a movie, you'll have to shut it completely off.  It's pretty annoying and takes some getting used to.  My poor hubby just can't help himself and even though he knows what I'm doing, he will still proceed to ask me a million times, "What's that noise?" Actually, I'm not sure which is more annoying.

My final word:

Ok, show of hands: Who wouldn't want to have a genius baby right out of the womb?  If you look around, just about every product on the market claims to make your baby smarter, sharper, more agile, etc.  I have yet to find the marketing slogan "We'll keep your baby average or below the curve."  So, there is definitely a reason to feel a little skeptical about these types of claims.  My personal belief is that, while something like this probably won't cause any harm,  it is likely to be a series of things that keep your child advanced in the long run, i.e. reading to them, good nutrition, etc.

I did read a little bit about the science behind the Baby Plus System, but I can't honestly say I've put it all together yet enough to fully trust the results 100% yet.  With that said, however, I am willing to give it a shot, more so out of curiosity than anything else.  It's easy to use and non-invasive, so why not?  Meanwhile, I'll be on the hunt for other users of this product to hear their amazing genius baby stories.

Strange things people say to pregnant women

I just came across a hilarious article about what not to say to pregnant women.  The article starts off with what I have to agree is one of the oddest questions people love to ask, "was this pregnancy planned?" Now, I seem to get that question and I constantly wonder what the logic behind that is. I mean, I'm a married woman, so it's not like I'm exactly high risk for random slip ups. But then I only have one other child who's a pretty appropriate distance in age. Besides, the sheer element of randomness surrounding the question, it always forces me to go into the whole "Well, we weren't trying, but we weren't not trying either" discussion which just sort of offers a mezzanine seat into our sex lives and birth control planning. That's right along up there with the lady in the article whose boss asked her if she was panning on keeping her baby. ODD!

But I have to say, my pregnancies have brought about quite a few odd comments. Top of the list

Your baby did that to you?

Ever since my daughter Leila came into this world, I have been thoroughly fascinated by her thoughts and just the overall way she has found herself in the world.

I remember when she first discovered Elmo, for example. We had gone to church that morning and she was wearing a dress with a picture of Elmo on it. Naturally, people kept mentioning the word "Elmo" to her and at that point, she was absolutely clueless as to who that was and why people kept saying that to her. The confusion was written all over her face as she continuously repeated the word Elmo in the car wondering if this was an important word she was expected to know. Finally later that day, I handed her her Elmo doll and said, "Look Leila, this is Elmo." She looked at the doll, then to her shirt and it was like a light bulb went on in her head. I would later come to regret that discovery turned obsession.
