Wordless Wednesday: And the award for Big Sister of the Year goes to...

 Leila!

Ok, just a few words...

Remember some of my previous posts about all of the things I feared about Leila becoming a big sister?  Boy, was I wrong!!  She has been the most amazing big sister and has welcomed Samara into our lives with open arms!  All day long, it's "I want to hold her," "I want to feed her," "I love her!"  It's the most beautiful thing, even when I'm literally trying to get her to back off a little (I have to keep reminding her that her sister is still just a little too small to play with her).

I've been thoroughly fascinated by the words that have come out of her mind and mouth since we told her she was going to be a big sister.  There was of course the "Your baby did that to you?" comment she made in regards to my protruding belly button, which still has me cracking up.  Since then, there have been several more for the books...

1. When she got tired of hugging my pregnant belly, she said, "I want to hold her now."  I said, "No honey, you can't hold her til she comes out of my belly."  She paused for a moment and asks me, "We can't open it?"  {A very pregnant me} thinks, "If only..."

2. Over Christmas break, she makes it a point to announce to everyone that while I'm her sister's Mommy, "My sister's Daddy is not here!  *....crickets....*  Mind you, my child does belong to my husband and thank goodness he knows that, since we all know that could have been a major oops moment!  I've learned since that she does not care if I have 100 children, but to her daddy, it's a totally different ball game.

3. It has taken her some time to get used to the whole idea of breastfeeding. The first time I tried to nurse Samara in front of Leila, she had a fit.  "Nooooo! She doesn't want to eat there!" she screamed over and over again in pure disgust.  She's starting to come around...I think

Well, so much for Wordless Wednesday!

Product Review: Comforts for Baby Training Pants and Wipes

I recently had the opportunity to test out the Comforts® For Baby training pants and wipes on my oldest daughter, courtesy of BuzzAgent.  You've seen this brand before at your local Kroger store - they are the diapers, wipes, and formula in the green packaging that you've probably passed over and questioned the quality of such inexpensive products (or maybe it was just me).  I've used the wipes several times before and had no problems with them. I'd also had several of my friends tell me about the training pants before, however, it was my first time trying them out.

Here are a few facts according to Comforts for Baby:

Comforts® Diapers and Training Pants
  • Keep your baby dry, protected and comfy no matter what your day brings
  • Available in infant and toddler sizes
  • Includes the Touch of Nature line: chlorine-free diapers with a plant based liner and outer cover for natural absorbency
Comforts® Wipes
  • Help keep your baby or toddler clean and fresh without irritating their sensitive skin
  • Clean and moisturize without alcohol or other harsh chemicals

What I love about them:

As I said, I've used the wipes before and loved that they were a much cheaper option and I had no problems with them.  Although I was never exclusive to them, I did think they were the smarter choice of wipes to send to the daycare and for multiple uses, such as wiping hands and face.

I'm willing to admit, however, that I am a bit of a diaper snob.  My oldest is and has always been, to put it tactfully, very hard on her diapers.  Therefore, I simply could not take a chance on too many brands and run the risk of leaks and messes! However, I was very pleasantly surprised at my results with the training pants!  I can't say I found much difference between this and the more expensive brands. I used them both during the day and overnight and from an absorbency standpoint, they were able to withstand even the biggest accidents!  My daughter was also comfortable with the fit and texture of the training pants and I doubt she noticed a difference either.

What's not to love?:

In all honesty, there's really not much to say here.  If I had to pick something, I would warn that your kid won't get the pretty and cool characters on their training pants.  I know some beginners might adjust better with the support of Mickey Mouse and Disney princesses, but I don't know how much more you'd be willing to pay for that benefit.

Also, with the wipes, you don't get quite as many options of texture and scents as you would with the bigger brands.  They are unscented and pretty medium textured.  This was fine with me, since I generally stayed away from scented wipes anyway, but more options are always nice.

My final word:

As I said, I had a very good experience with both of these products for my toddler.   Now that I have a newborn again, I do prefer to stick with another brand of diapers and wipes with just because I want the sensitive option.  However, for the more seasoned behinds, I do find this to be the better choice for parents who want to save money and still get a quality product.

Having kids makes you age quickly

My biological dad and I had a conversation a few years ago where he said, "You know, having children makes you age quickly because you have to worry about them too much.  That's why when I'm away, I try not to think about you and your brothers." Yes, those were his words and if you know my father, you know he was probably NOT kidding.

Anyway, I didn't have kids at the time, but now that I do, I can totally understand what he was saying (minus the second part). I mean, I can honestly say that I have not had a good night's sleep or a worry free day in the 3 years and 5 days since my first daughter was born!  I've worried about her coughs, her rashes, her snotty noses. I've checked on her breathing while she slept and I've examined every diaper and whatever landed in the potty. I've wondered if she was developing right for her age, was she watching too much tv, getting enough exercise, developing allergies, YOU NAME IT, I've worried about it!  I was twenty nine when I had her, but I believe I've aged about 15 years since.

Now on to baby #2 and here we go again.  Is she feeding enough, is she sleeping too much, and so on. Of course we were given more to worry about in the hospital when the lactation nurse tells us she thought something was wrong with my daughter's uvula which was affecting her suckling. Sounded minor, but she proceeded to tell me that it could even affect her speech someday and she might need to see a speech therapist and what not!  After only hours on the blogs and a frantic visit to the pediatrician,  what do you know? There was nothing to worry about! That situation alone probably aged me another 5 years and we're still only at 2 weeks old!

So, just when I stop to ask myself when can you actually stop worrying about your kids like crazy, I get a call from my mother telling me how "worried" she was because I hadn't called her in 2 days! I had to remind her for the millionth time that if anything were to happen to me, there are enough people in my life who would let her know. But, she replied, "I'm your mother! I can't help it."   She must be about 100 years old by now!

50 Must-Do Rules For Dads of Daughters

I just have to say, I love this so much! As a soon to be mom of 2 daughters, and a woman who did not grow up with the best father-daughter relationship, this list truly resonates in my heart. I actually sat my husband down the other day and read it to him and even he had to lower to television just to take in all that I was reading. They are such simple rules, but when I look at the relationship between my daughter and her daddy, I can totally see the importance in each of these. Enjoy!

Everything Happens for a Reason

A friend of mine posted this on FB the other day and I thought I'd share...  It's just a reminder that everything happens for a reason.

Me: God, can I ask You a question?
God: Sure
Me: Promise You won't get mad
God: I promise
Me: Why did You let so much stuff happen to me today?
God: What do u mean?
Me: Well, I woke up late
God: Yes
Me: My car took forever to start
God: Okay
Me: at lunch they made my sandwich wrong & I had to wait
God: Huummm
Me: On the way home, my phone went DEAD, just as I picked up a call
God: All right
Me: And on top of it all off, when I got home ~I just want to soak my feet in my new foot massager & relax. BUT it wouldn't work!!! Nothing went right today! Why did You do that?
